Understanding Division

Division is just sharing equally. We'll start from the very basics and build up step by step — no prior knowledge needed!

Part 1

What is Division?

Let's start from the very beginning

Division means splitting a number into equal groups. That's it! Think of it like sharing sweets equally with your friends.

💡 The big idea: If you have 12 sweets and want to share them equally between 3 friends, how many does each person get? That is a division problem!

🍬 Imagine sharing 12 sweets among 3 friends:

✓ Each friend gets 4 sweets. So 12 ÷ 3 = 4
Part 2

The Language of Division

Key words you must know

Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient
The number you divide ÷ How many groups = The answer
12
DIVIDEND
The number being divided (the total)
3
DIVISOR
The number you divide by (number of groups)
4
QUOTIENT
The answer — how many in each group

Division can be written in 3 different ways — they all mean the same thing:

12 ÷ 3
Using the divide sign
12 / 3
Using a slash
12
3
As a fraction
All three mean: How many times does 3 go into 12? Answer: 4 times
Part 3

The Bus Stop Method

The standard written method used in UK schools

In Year 6 UK, we use the Bus Stop Method (also called short division). It looks like a bus stop shelter, which is why it has that name!

🚌 Think of it like a bus stop: the divisor stands outside waiting, and the dividend sits inside the shelter. The answer (quotient) sits on top.
EXAMPLE: 84 ÷ 4
4 8 4 2 1 divisor dividend quotient (answer)
1
Look at the first digit
We have 8 in the tens column. Ask: how many times does 4 go into 8?
4 × 2 = 8 → write 2 above
2
Move to the next digit
Now look at 4 in the units column. Ask: how many times does 4 go into 4?
4 × 1 = 4 → write 1 above
3
Read your answer
The digits on top give you the answer. We wrote 2 then 1.
84 ÷ 4 = 21

96 ÷ 4 = ?
Getting Started
Set up the Bus Stop
Write 4 outside the bus stop, and 96 inside. We are going to divide digit by digit, starting from the left.
9
6
4 ) 9 6
Step 1
Divide the first digit
Look at 9. How many times does 4 go into 9?
4 × 1 = 4   4 × 2 = 8   4 × 3 = 12 (too big!)
So 4 goes into 9 exactly 2 times. We write 2 above the 9.
9
6
2 _
Step 2
Find the remainder
4 × 2 = 8. But we had 9. So there is a remainder of 9 - 8 = 1.
We carry this 1 over to the next digit. The 6 becomes 16.
1
16
2 _ (carry 1)
Step 3
Divide the next digit
Now divide 16 by 4. How many times does 4 go into 16?
4 × 4 = 16. Exactly! So we write 4 above the 6.
9
16
2 4
Done!
Read the answer
We wrote 2 and then 4 on top. That means the answer is 24. No remainder!

96 ÷ 4 = 24 ✓
Part 5

What About Remainders?

Sometimes division doesn't come out perfectly even

A remainder is what is left over when a number cannot be divided equally. Think of it like this: if you have 13 sweets and 3 friends, each gets 4 sweets but there is 1 left over.

🍬 13 ÷ 3 = 4 remainder 1   (written as 4 r1)
Check: 3 × 4 = 12, and 12 + 1 = 13 ✓

Example: 29 ÷ 4

1
Look at tens digit: 2
Does 4 go into 2? No — 2 is smaller than 4. So we look at the first two digits together: 29.
2
How many times does 4 go into 29?
4×1=4   4×2=8   4×3=12   4×4=16   4×5=20   4×6=24   4×7=28   4×8=32 (too big!)
So 4 goes into 29 7 times.
4 × 7 = 28
3
Find the remainder
29 − 28 = 1. There is 1 left over.
29 ÷ 4 = 7 r1
✓ Always check: (divisor × quotient) + remainder = dividend  →  (4×7) + 1 = 28 + 1 = 29 ✓

Times Table Tricks

Division and multiplication are opposites — use these tips!

📚 Key fact: Division is the reverse of multiplication! If you know 6 × 7 = 42, then you automatically know 42 ÷ 6 = 7 and 42 ÷ 7 = 6.
÷ 2
Dividing by 2
Simply halve the number.
48 ÷ 2 = 24 (half of 48)
÷ 4
Dividing by 4
Halve it, then halve again!
48 ÷ 4 = 48÷2÷2 = 12
÷ 5
Dividing by 5
Multiply by 2, then divide by 10.
35 ÷ 5 = 70 ÷ 10 = 7
÷ 10
Dividing by 10
Move the decimal point one place left.
470 ÷ 10 = 47
÷ 3
Dividing by 3
If digits add up to a multiple of 3, it divides evenly.
63: 6+3=9 (multiple of 3!) → 63÷3=21
÷ 9
Dividing by 9
If digits add up to a multiple of 9, it divides evenly.
81: 8+1=9 → 81÷9=9
Part 8

Common Mistakes to Avoid

These are the errors most students make

!
Forgetting to carry the remainder forward
When a digit doesn't divide cleanly, students often forget to add the leftover to the next digit.
✓ Fix: Always ask "what's left over?" and add it to the front of the next digit before dividing.
!
Dividing in the wrong direction
Division must always start from the LEFT (the biggest digit) and move right.
✓ Fix: Always start from the leftmost digit. Never start from the right!
!
Confusing 0 in the quotient
If a divisor won't go into a digit, students sometimes skip it. They should write 0 above that digit instead.
✓ Fix: If the divisor is bigger than the current digit, write 0 above it and carry that digit forward.
!
Not checking the answer
Always verify: multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get back to the dividend.
✓ Fix: (Quotient × Divisor) + Remainder = Dividend. Always check!
